Have you ever heard the phrase Memento Mori?
It’s a Latin term meaning “Remember that you will die.”
There’s a story from long ago in Europe about a victorious general who, during a parade celebrating a triumphant battle, had his attendant repeatedly whisper this phrase to him.
“This victory is not eternal…
It could have been my life that was lost instead.”
By remembering death, perhaps he avoided becoming arrogant in his moment of glory.
When someone feels the presence of death close by, how do they live the rest of their life?
Six months? A year? Or perhaps 50 more years?
Wise individuals often say that life is synonymous with time.
How much time of life do we each have left?
Are there things you want to do, places you want to visit, or experiences you wish to have?
It doesn’t have to be all about fulfilling your dreams.
Are you able to find happiness in your daily life?
We often assume that people don’t die.
We believe that we don’t die.
We take for granted that tomorrow and the day after will come, just as today did.
I feel the same way.
In fact, I rarely even think about it.
The concept of time often vanishes from my awareness, and it’s no wonder.
But what if tomorrow doesn’t come?
What if I face a life-threatening illness next year?
What if an accident takes my life?
Tomorrow’s arrival may seem inevitable, but in truth, it’s not guaranteed.
Today’s Reflection
Memento Mori. Death comes for all of us. Don’t forget that each day. You can’t take anything from this world into the realm of the dead, but you can leave something behind. Give to others.
I hope to include reflections like this in each post going forward.
If this resonates with you and makes your today even a little better than yesterday, I’d be delighted.
See you next time!

Just three days remain in this year.
Looking back, 2024 has been filled with many events.
On January 1, the Noto Peninsula earthquake struck.
The following day, there was an aircraft collision...
Many people might have felt uneasy about how this year would unfold.
For me, it’s been a year that brought both new encounters and farewells.
That’s simply how life works, isn’t it?
I’ve had opportunities to try new things this year.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve been diligently doing my best all along.
It’s not that the sun is watching over me,
but rather, people have been watching.
When it comes to taking on new challenges,
who would you entrust such opportunities to if you were the one assigning them?
Even without guarantees of success due to a lack of proven track records,
you’d likely choose someone who sincerely approaches the task at hand.
Without knowing what kind of person they are,
there’s no way to entrust them with the job.
No matter how much you want to do something,
simply saying “I want to do it!” doesn’t mean you’re automatically entitled to the opportunity.
People observe your daily attitude toward work.
I feel this strongly.
No one’s watching you intensely all the time; everyone’s busy.
But your work ethic on-site, follow-up reporting, paperwork, and even your demeanor and communication—they all contribute to how you’re perceived.
It’s not just the on-site tasks but everything as a whole that is evaluated.
You should be mindful of that.
By pouring your energy into what’s in front of you,
you might be shaping a very different future for yourself.
Having been a one-person business owner for about ten years,
I’m fairly confident this principle holds true.
Focus on what’s in front of you!
No matter the type of work, give it your all.
Diligently completing the tasks you’ve been entrusted with,
consistently delivering results,
and turning that effort into growth.
By doing so, when an opportunity aligning with your aspirations appears,
you may be granted the chance to seize it.
There’s no time to sulk or complain.
See you next time!
