Hello everyone. I’m Yasui, a one-man company owner mainly doing inspections of high-pressure gas equipment.
Today, I went to Hamamatsu for a heater replacement job.
On the way back, I grabbed a meal at a service area.
And there, I saw a parent and child, and… well, it just made me think, “Hmm, really?”
(Not that it matters — it’s someone else’s family anyway lol)
At a square counter, to my right, a father and his kid were eating.
The dad kept getting up to refill water or go grab his own meal.
The kid had already started eating, but they had an iPad placed behind their tray, watching something while eating.
Totally glued to the screen.
And of course, I couldn’t help thinking, “What’s with this kid?”
(But again — someone else’s family, so who cares lol)
In my house, this would never happen, but I feel like we’re seeing more and more adults and kids like this.
Being with someone, yet acting like you’re completely alone.
Mealtime turning into something you do “while doing something else.”
No gratitude for simply being able to eat.
Not even paying attention to whether the food in front of you tastes good or bad — almost like shutting down their senses during a meal.
No appreciation for the flavor.
And yeah, if someone asked me, “Aren’t you like that sometimes?”
…I’d have to admit that hits close to home.
Back when I used to eat while watching or scrolling, I realized I wasn’t even capable of focusing on what was in front of me anymore — and that scared me a little.
Do we really need to process information even when we’re sitting with someone, sharing a meal?
Thinking of it that way, it feels like we’re disrespecting people without even noticing, and that’s frightening.
Of course, necessary messages, quick checks, emails — those are fine.
I’m not saying touching your phone at all is rude, nor am I judging what’s good or bad.
But I do think it’s important to have a little personal sense of ethics about it.
When someone eats while mentally checked out, with no gratitude for the meal, no appreciation for the taste…
At that point, honestly, they might as well go eat some grass instead of food someone worked hard to make.
If my kids did that, I’d smack ’em. (Half joking… maybe lol)
Anyway — that’s what I wanted to say.
Bad habits are better cut off early.
Kids watch us closely.
And if you ask whether I want them to mimic that behavior — of course I don’t.

See you next time!
