Hello. I’m Yasui Shacho, the owner-president of a one-person company that mainly handles inspections of high-pressure gas facilities.
Today, I went shopping in the morning, and for lunch I tried making tai-meshi using small sea bream that I bought there.
In the afternoon, I washed my trusty HiAce, my constant companion that takes me to all sorts of places every day, and got it nice and clean. I wanted to wash away a year’s worth of grime.
There’s no particular good luck that comes from it, and cleaning it doesn’t magically improve how the car runs.
If you say it’s just a matter of feeling, you’re absolutely right.
Day in and day out, it runs in place of my own feet, carrying heavy loads for me.
The more it runs, the dirtier it gets.
A car is, after all, just a machine—simply a tool for transporting things—but somehow it becomes endearing, like a real partner.
That’s why I felt like giving it a proper clean. The car wash was crowded, so I washed it by hand.
Doing a big year-end cleaning, organizing rooms, and gathering unnecessary items to throw away—
perhaps people long ago understood that if you don’t do these things, you lose the chance to reduce your belongings, and they just keep increasing.
Ideally, you’d clean thoroughly and avoid accumulating things on a regular basis, but that’s easier said than done.
Being grateful for the things around you, cleaning them, and welcoming the New Year—
it seems that the traditions and milestones tied to seasons and events exist for a reason.
Daily, weekly, monthly, semiannual, yearly.
Deciding in advance what to do at each interval is a key to keeping your life and surroundings in order.
I want next year to be even better than this one.
Let’s start with what’s right around us.
Thank you very much for reading throughout the year!
See you again!
