Hello, this is Yasui, a solo business owner running a company that mainly inspects high-pressure gas equipment.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “give and take.”
It literally means to give and to receive, but if you think of it as mutually providing value to each other, it becomes easier to understand.
And importantly—it’s not “take and give.”
It may sound like nitpicking, but give comes first and take comes after.
This, I believe, is the true foundation of business.
This isn’t just about buying and selling.
Even for people who work as employees—those who sell their labor as their product—the same concept fully applies.
So what is it that employees must “give” first?
It seems obvious that the first move must also be give.
To earn a higher HR evaluation, you absolutely need to give first, don’t you?
Work hard. Maintain good relationships. Don’t lie. Have a decent moral compass.
Even if you’re not in a position to evaluate others, wouldn’t you want to give a high rating to someone like that?
A person with a giving mindset—a person who contributes—is the one closest to success.
But unfortunate people think the opposite.
They say things like, “I made this much at my previous job, so I want at least that.”
Okay…but if we promise that amount, what will you give to the company or your team?
Do you have goals? A plan? Something of value you will provide?
If you want compensation, you must also provide value.
Now imagine they reversed the order and started with the give.
That would make you think, “Oh, this person is different.”
Put aside your own benefit for a moment and think about the benefit of others.
If that’s too abstract, then try thinking only about the benefit of others.
This doesn’t mean lose or accept unprofitable deals.
It means asking:
What value can I provide?
What benefits do others gain from working with me?
Some people say that even “give and take” is too soft.
They say it should be give, give, give.
Give as much as you can—because what you give will eventually return to you.
I’m not at that level yet, but I feel like I’m beginning to understand what this “spirit of giving” really means.
I’ll keep holding on to this small realization and do my best to grow.
Thank you very much for reading!
See you again!
