Hello. My name is Yasui, and I run a company as a solo CEO, mainly engaged in the inspection of high-pressure gas facilities.
Renewal! Rebirth! Decluttering!
My mind feels as if it’s being crushed by an overflow of stuff.
I truly understand why people say that “the amount of visible floor space equals mental breathing room”…
From Assets to Trash
That is the title, but do you know what an “asset” actually is?
An asset is a collective term for things that have monetary value and can be converted into money. Regardless of whether it’s an individual or a corporation, this includes not only cash already held as savings, but also property that can be converted into money in the future.
— quoted from Chester Inheritance Tax Services
Elsewhere, assets are defined as things whose value is positive.
Therefore, in order to continue holding something as an asset, proper management is required.
This is especially true for current assets.
Current assets include purchased goods and inventory. If management is inappropriate and items must be discarded or become unusable, losing their value as products, they cease to be assets.
That’s why proper management is necessary—to maintain value until the day the product can be sold as a product.
Even when something goes from “brand new” to merely “unused,” its value can change depending on the person, and it may even become unsellable.
If you purchased something as an asset, it is essential that it actually delivers value.
Here, we begin to see the risks of overstocking and poor estimates that result in excess inventory.
If you don’t own unnecessary things, damage from disasters can be minimized.
Management costs and the human burden involved are also reduced.
Without excess orders, you can focus on other work, and the effort required to clean up unnecessary items decreases as well.
If you fail to do this, assets can easily turn into trash.
Waste accumulates little by little until it becomes a mountain.
The other day, I had a conversation with a client I always learn from, and something they said stuck with me:
“Managers get exhausted if they manage people. They should manage how things are managed.”
Organizations, like society, function based on rules and discipline.
Without them, everything becomes based on personal rules, and the company itself becomes difficult to sustain.
How should proper management be established?
These are days filled with 고민 over things I haven’t done for the past ten-plus years.
Don’t turn assets into trash.
Let assets remain assets when letting them go.
I intend to keep working toward that.
Thank you very much for reading to the end.
See you again!
