Hello. I’m Yasui, a one-person company president running a business mainly engaged in inspections of high-pressure gas equipment.
Recently, I’ve had to create several construction estimates back-to-back.
Why are construction estimates always so exhausting?
I go through every single component, draw it on a diagram, pick up the costs one by one… and it takes a huge amount of time and effort.
For now, this is the most reliable method to avoid mistakes, but I hope that by doing more and more of these, I’ll eventually find the thread of an idea that leads to a better process.
When it comes to our daily thoughts and actions, having a sense of ethics and morality gives us a solid foundation—something like a core within us—so it becomes easier to make correct decisions.
Of course, these values should evolve over time, but by having them, we can always aim in the direction we believe is “better.”
On the other hand, if you don’t have such guiding principles, your direction becomes inconsistent and you tend to survive situations with temporary tricks and shortcuts.
In other words, it directly affects the way you live.
When you’re unsure about a decision, ethics and morality help you tremendously.
When uncertain, choose the harder path.
If you’re told to choose between the easy way and the difficult way, anyone would want to escape into the easy one.
But in those moments, your beliefs and guiding principles become the compass.
By having them, you can stand and face hardship—that’s what I believe.
Even when you feel like you might fall into something wicked, ethics and morality can prevent you from slipping.
Looking inward, placing your hand on your chest and reflecting—that’s when they become useful.
I personally enjoy reading The Analects (論語), and I recommend giving it a try.
