Hello, I’m Yasui, the owner-president of a one-person company mainly engaged in inspections of high-pressure gas facilities.
With the weather being unstable and many job sites far away, I’ve been traveling the day before to be safe.
It’s happened twice just this past week.
It does come out of my own pocket, but… the work doesn’t get canceled, and saying “I couldn’t make it to the site” simply isn’t an option.
Human beings are wired to favor maintaining the status quo.
Change creates stress, so we’re basically built to resist it.
That’s why, even when we want to change, it’s not easy to do so.
When you think about it, that makes perfect sense.
When change is imposed on us, a feeling of resistance naturally arises.
Even in forced environments, we instinctively push back.
Our familiar way of doing things is altered.
We’re asked to adopt methods different from what we’ve always done.
And if a job site isn’t going well, yet we can’t think about what’s actually happening or what the real cause is, we probably won’t even consider changing in the first place.
By the time we finally realize it—game over.
What matters is to keep a close eye on the work in front of us, to monitor our own thinking and actions, even just a little, and to keep asking ourselves whether there might be a better way.
There’s a saying: “Maintaining the status quo is the same as stagnation.”
In today’s VUCA world, where the future is unpredictable, it’s probably safest to assume that maintaining the current state rarely leads to good outcomes.
When you feel the urge to push back, it can be a good idea to pause for a moment.
Once emotions take over, nothing moves forward, and steering things in a better direction becomes difficult.
Listening to others’ opinions tends to become harder as we get older.
That said, people who remain open-minded regardless of age are the ones who keep growing.
They also tend to have great personalities and are genuinely attractive as human beings.
Be honest with yourself.
Be someone who can observe your own thoughts.
Break through the wall of the status quo, and keep moving in a better direction.
