Hello. I'm Yasui, a solo business owner running a company that specializes in high-pressure gas equipment inspections.
I turned 40 this month.
My eldest daughter asked me, “Did anything change when you turned 40?”
I simply replied, “Nothing changed at all, really (laughs).”
The day before, I was just a 39-year-old guy, and suddenly I'm 40.
But it’s not like anything drastically changes because of it.
Sure, my physical strength is fading.
Even after sleep, I don’t feel fully recovered.
I use up all my energy during the day and feel no motivation to do anything at night.
That kind of condition might still be a little ways off for me, though.
There's a saying from The Analects of Confucius:
“At forty, one is no longer perplexed.”
This idea of “unshakeable clarity” or fuwaku.
In my 30s, I often wondered:
Am I living the right way?
Is this really okay?
That kind of self-questioning came up at each milestone.
Looking back, I felt like I was always swaying, lacking a firm axis.
But I’ve come to realize—seeking something from the outside is the wrong approach.
There’s no one but myself who can guide my own fate and life in a better direction.
Complaining about the world or politics won’t change anything within a 5-meter radius of my daily life.
If you truly want things to improve and feel the current state isn’t good enough, the fastest and most effective solution is to change yourself.
And through that, I’ve come to another realization—
There are things that won’t change just by changing yourself.
That’s what organizations are.
When you want to lead people, ability alone doesn’t always get results.
You need wisdom, knowledge, and a deep understanding of human nature.
These are essential.
What is an organization?
What does it mean to lead a group of people?
Understanding these things is critical.
In the next ten years, whether or not I engage with the concept of "organization" will likely define the direction of my life.
My 40s.
I believe that by the time I reach 45, I’ll already have a sense of the road my life will take beyond that.
Life is long, yet short.
From here on out, it will probably pass by like a roller coaster.
If I don’t stay alert, I’ll arrive at the end before I know it.
So, let’s get going!
Thank you very much for reading to the end.
See you again!
