Hello, this is President Yasui. I run a one-person company specializing in high-pressure gas equipment inspections.
I've been traveling a lot for work, often going out for drinks with clients, so I’ve taken a bit of a break from posting. To those of you who look forward to my updates (though I doubt there are many😅), I sincerely apologize.
January, February, and March are what you might call the slow season. When there are no on-site jobs and no in-house projects, my lifestyle starts to resemble that of retirement.
Since the winter of 2021, winter jobs have drastically decreased, and for the past three years, from January to March 2024, I may have been experiencing a mild form of depression.
When you're busy, you think:
"If I had time, I’d want to do this and that."
But when you actually have the time, you don’t end up doing those things.
To get yourself to take action, you need to say,
"I’m really going to do this. Tomorrow, I absolutely will!"
and make a commitment with both your mind and body.
Honestly, I’ve realized that things I want to do when I have time—
or more accurately, things I should do when I have time—
are the hardest to actually get done.
When I’m busy, I come up with ideas like,
"I want to make this and do that," or
"I want to improve this to make it even better."
But by the time I actually have the chance to work on them,
the enthusiasm has faded, and it’s like a switch in my body has been turned off.
Thinking about the future, there are so many things I should be doing.
But those important but non-urgent tasks always get pushed aside.
So, time just keeps passing.
Every year, I find myself thinking about the same unfinished tasks.
That’s why I need to follow through on what I decide to do during the slow season.
If I need materials, I can prepare them in advance during the busy season.
Stocking up beforehand makes it impossible to escape.
If I run away from it, I’ll waste money—
which increases the urgency and forces me into action.
It’s a way to light a fire under myself.
I don’t want to waste time or feel down during the slow season.
This year, I also tried incorporating reading into my routine.
When I don’t have work piled up, I tend to waste time surfing the internet or shopping online.
But instead of spending time on things that don’t leave anything meaningful behind,
I thought it would be better to gain useful knowledge or read interesting stories.
During the increasingly harsh summer work periods,
there’s little time for reading because my body is completely exhausted.
But during the slow season, when my brain and body aren’t worn out,
I can tackle time-consuming but important tasks.
Reading is great in that sense—
as long as I have a book, I can start right away.
I don’t have plans to retire anytime soon,
but I also see this as good training for how to use my time wisely when I eventually step away from work.
Thinking of it that way makes me feel a little lucky.
Still, I love being on-site, meeting people,
and delivering quality work to the world.
The slow season is ending, and spring is almost here.
I can’t wait!
Today’s Quote
"During the busy season, focus on delivering value to the world.
During the slow season, focus on building your strength.
Understanding the rhythm of the year is important, too."
See you next time!
