Hello. This is President Yasui, running a one-man company mainly engaged in the inspection of high-pressure gas equipment.
Today marks the end of my Obon work.
Tomorrow there’s no site work.
I also finished and submitted my reports today, so tomorrow I plan to spend time with my family.
Usually, it’s the six of us—my wife and our four kids—but tonight two of them are away at swimming practice, so it’s just four of us.
Even with just two gone, the house feels incredibly quiet.
With fewer people around, even the small daily routines go much more smoothly.
As a result, the kids went to bed early, and now it’s just my wife and me in the living and dining room.
One day, when the kids grow up, find jobs, or start families of their own, it’ll be just the two of us living together.
Right now, I sometimes think, “They’re so noisy!”—but I know that someday, that very noise will become something I long for.
Like it or not, those quiet, calm days will eventually find their way to us.
Laughter, arguments, whining, and sweet voices—once the kids grow up and leave this house, we won’t get to hear them every day anymore.
When they ask, “Do this for me, do that for me,” it can feel bothersome.
But lately, I find myself stopping whatever I’m doing as much as possible and giving in.
Brush my teeth with me.
Sleep next to me.
Come swim in the pool with me.
I realize these little requests won’t last forever, so I’ve started to think, “Well, this is precious while it lasts,” and I end up happily giving them that extra bit of service.
It’s like work too—when you’re busy, you crave days off. “I just want a break!” But as you grow older, the days will come when, whether you want them or not, you’ll have plenty of time off.
And in a life with too many breaks, those “rest days” can feel empty—you might just find yourself scrolling your phone all day, only to realize the day has slipped away.
Right now, our everyday life may feel “noisy”—but knowing that this noisy phase only lasts a few more years makes it feel precious.
Perhaps happiness is something you can find even in those very inconveniences.
And when those quiet days do arrive, it will be important to have maintained good communication with my wife—after all, a comfortable home is one of the most important things in life. :)
Thank you very much for reading this far!
See you next time!
