Have you ever heard the phrase Memento Mori?
It’s a Latin term meaning “Remember that you will die.”
There’s a story from long ago in Europe about a victorious general who, during a parade celebrating a triumphant battle, had his attendant repeatedly whisper this phrase to him.
“This victory is not eternal…
It could have been my life that was lost instead.”
By remembering death, perhaps he avoided becoming arrogant in his moment of glory.
When someone feels the presence of death close by, how do they live the rest of their life?
Six months? A year? Or perhaps 50 more years?
Wise individuals often say that life is synonymous with time.
How much time of life do we each have left?
Are there things you want to do, places you want to visit, or experiences you wish to have?
It doesn’t have to be all about fulfilling your dreams.
Are you able to find happiness in your daily life?
We often assume that people don’t die.
We believe that we don’t die.
We take for granted that tomorrow and the day after will come, just as today did.
I feel the same way.
In fact, I rarely even think about it.
The concept of time often vanishes from my awareness, and it’s no wonder.
But what if tomorrow doesn’t come?
What if I face a life-threatening illness next year?
What if an accident takes my life?
Tomorrow’s arrival may seem inevitable, but in truth, it’s not guaranteed.
Today’s Reflection
Memento Mori. Death comes for all of us. Don’t forget that each day. You can’t take anything from this world into the realm of the dead, but you can leave something behind. Give to others.
I hope to include reflections like this in each post going forward.
If this resonates with you and makes your today even a little better than yesterday, I’d be delighted.
See you next time!

Just three days remain in this year.
Looking back, 2024 has been filled with many events.
On January 1, the Noto Peninsula earthquake struck.
The following day, there was an aircraft collision...
Many people might have felt uneasy about how this year would unfold.
For me, it’s been a year that brought both new encounters and farewells.
That’s simply how life works, isn’t it?
I’ve had opportunities to try new things this year.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve been diligently doing my best all along.
It’s not that the sun is watching over me,
but rather, people have been watching.
When it comes to taking on new challenges,
who would you entrust such opportunities to if you were the one assigning them?
Even without guarantees of success due to a lack of proven track records,
you’d likely choose someone who sincerely approaches the task at hand.
Without knowing what kind of person they are,
there’s no way to entrust them with the job.
No matter how much you want to do something,
simply saying “I want to do it!” doesn’t mean you’re automatically entitled to the opportunity.
People observe your daily attitude toward work.
I feel this strongly.
No one’s watching you intensely all the time; everyone’s busy.
But your work ethic on-site, follow-up reporting, paperwork, and even your demeanor and communication—they all contribute to how you’re perceived.
It’s not just the on-site tasks but everything as a whole that is evaluated.
You should be mindful of that.
By pouring your energy into what’s in front of you,
you might be shaping a very different future for yourself.
Having been a one-person business owner for about ten years,
I’m fairly confident this principle holds true.
Focus on what’s in front of you!
No matter the type of work, give it your all.
Diligently completing the tasks you’ve been entrusted with,
consistently delivering results,
and turning that effort into growth.
By doing so, when an opportunity aligning with your aspirations appears,
you may be granted the chance to seize it.
There’s no time to sulk or complain.
See you next time!

I’ve been listening to Black Box Thinking by Matthew Syed through Amazon’s audiobook service, Audible. This audiobook makes it incredibly easy to visualize concepts in your mind, and despite being a challenging book, it’s so engaging that I can’t stop listening.
The idea of learning from failure is something everyone likely agrees with when they hear it.
However, haven’t you sometimes repeated the same mistakes or found yourself making similar errors over and over?
It appears there are two types of mindsets: the growth mindset and the fixed mindset. Both types recognize their mistakes because failure is evident and undeniable.
However, brainwave studies reveal differences in how the brain reacts afterward. These differences determine whether someone learns from failure or not. Simply put, if you don’t even try to learn, you won’t.
If failure doesn’t evoke any emotional response, it may stem from a deliberate lack of awareness.
For instance, if you view a failure as mere coincidence, a random event, luck, or a gamble, the mindset to learn from it will not emerge. This parallels the understanding of why success happens.
If success is merely coincidental, it lacks reproducibility. Understanding why something succeeded or failed is essential.
Failures often carry the potential for wasted costs or materials. However, by scientifically analyzing failure, you can turn even those missteps into something meaningful. Applying this mindset to everyday life could be highly beneficial.
For jobs involving safety, such as ours, where human error can easily lead to injury or accidents, this book provides highly valuable insights.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest and seemingly trivial things that lead to significant accidents.
Let’s keep our minds sharp and approach our daily tasks with renewed focus!
See you next time!

Recently, I had an opportunity to travel for work by air, and I flew with ANA.
During air travel, I always enjoy reading the in-flight magazine.
The cover of ANA's in-flight magazine "Tsubasa no Oukoku" caught my eye with the title "Midnight Engine Washing at the Airport" (December 2024 issue, Tsubasa no Ryuugi Vol. 27).
I read the article cover to cover.
The work described is called Water Wash, a task that involves cleaning aircraft engines.
Midnight operations, especially ones that use water in the dead of winter, must be extremely cold.
Having performed tasks with spray cans and solvents myself, I can deeply empathize with the physical hardship of such work.
There’s likely waste collection and recovery involved, and given the size of the aircraft, workers probably get drenched in water, too.
It’s no stretch to imagine how tough this job is.
Engine washing is carried out at four airports in Japan.
Due to noise issues—engines need to be run at a certain output after cleaning—it seems impractical to conduct this work at airports in urban areas like Fukuoka or Itami.
The Bombardier DHC-8-400 I was flying on at that moment had probably been cleaned at Chubu Centrair International Airport. Just imagining that made me feel oddly happy.
The article noted that cleaning the engine improves fuel efficiency.
Yet, as passengers, we would never notice this improvement ourselves.
Still, the workers carrying out these tasks affirmed its significance, and with pride in their work, they achieved 300 engine water washes annually.
This struck a chord with me, as I realized our work shares a similar reality. When we dismantle and maintain valves that appear to function perfectly fine, our customers may not perceive any difference afterward.
However, this doesn’t mean the work lacks meaning.
Maintenance workers and technicians are the unsung heroes.
The spotlight shines on the end-users—our customers—while we remain in the background, supporting them quietly and invisibly.
It is our mission to take pride in our work and constantly hone our skills.
The important question is: Where do we make our mark?
I want to continue giving my best in my role, right where I stand.
See you again!

Today, I’d like to talk about Amazon’s audiobook service, Audible.
Even if you don’t have time to sit down and read, you can enjoy books by simply listening to them while doing other tasks. It’s a truly innovative service!
If you’ve ever thought, “I want to read, but I just don’t have the time,” Audible often has free trial campaigns. I encourage you to register and give it a shot. People who are proactive about self-improvement tend to take action immediately—it’s true!
Do you know someone who says:
"I’m too busy to do this or that…”
Sometimes, even when we have the time, we still don’t act on it.
This is especially true for reading.
Many people claim they can’t read because they’re busy, but interestingly, the busiest professionals are often the ones making time for reading.
Reading doesn’t just mean sitting with a physical book. Digital platforms like Kindle e-books and audiobooks also count as valuable ways to consume content.
By replacing passive habits—like playing games or watching videos during your commute—with listening to an audiobook or reading a digital book, you can start your day with a more intellectually stimulating routine.
Even if you only have a minute to spare, open a book and give reading a try.
You’ll soon discover its rewards.
The key to transformation is taking action.
Whether it’s exercise, reading, or meaningful conversations—if there’s something you’ve been wanting to do, start right now. You’ll see the impact unfold!
That’s all for now—see you next time!

It always feels great to receive a message from someone, doesn’t it?
Whether it’s about work, seeking advice in a difficult situation, or simply an invitation to grab a meal, these small interactions carry meaning.
As I grow older, however, I’ve noticed that non-work-related relationships have become less frequent. It’s partly due to circumstances like raising kids, but I find myself deeply concerned about this trend.
I can’t help but wonder—what if I continue to grow older without meaningful connections with friends and end up living a disconnected, solitary old age?
Sure, I might think, "I’ll just reconnect with old friends later," but I can’t shake the feeling that things might not go that smoothly.
How would someone react to hearing from me if we haven’t spoken in years? People who are sensitive to such things might feel awkward or suspicious.
This is why I believe it’s essential not only to maintain old friendships but also to create new ones. Perhaps it’s time to discover a “third place”—a space that’s neither home nor work.
It could be a straightforward option like joining a hobby group or a sports club, or something unconventional you find online. Exploring these opportunities could be exciting.
As we age, physical stamina and mental sharpness naturally decline. Starting something new becomes increasingly challenging, and those who can do so are often in the minority.
Even if you think you’ll be fine now, there’s no guarantee you’ll feel the same way in the future.
For those raising kids, I understand there’s the added factor of balancing responsibilities with your partner. However, I believe that mutual respect and flexibility can make it possible to carve out time for personal pursuits.
Investing time now in shaping a more fulfilling future is crucial. By focusing on both the present and the near future, you can create a richer and more meaningful life ahead.
The key is not to restrict anyone or drag anyone down with you.
That’s the way I want to live—free and unburdened.
Life is short. It’s too brief to give up on things for any reason.
Until next time!
