Hello, I’m Yasui, the president of a one-person company mainly engaged in inspections of high-pressure gas facilities.
I recently got a haircut at a hair salon run by a friend of mine.
About once every three months, my hair gets so long that I can’t deal with it anymore, and that’s when I finally go get it cut. How often do you get your hair cut?
During our conversation, the topic came up that February is a slow month.
Apparently, people tend to get haircuts in line with events and the calendar. In December, they come in to get ready for the New Year. In March, it’s for graduation season, and in April, for entrance ceremonies—people want their hair to be just right for those milestones.
Anyway, February is especially quiet.
By the time my haircut finished, it was around 4 p.m., and the owner told me they were closing the shop for the day already.
If you can secure more time during a slow season, it feels like a good opportunity to thoroughly clean the shop, or to take care of maintenance that’s hard to do when things are busy. Setting aside the slow season as a maintenance period during the year makes a lot of sense to me.
The same applies to our line of work.
We also have slow seasons, and using that time to inspect equipment or maintain tools helps prevent panic during busy periods. They say that professionals take good care of their tools—and this is exactly the time to fix what can be fixed, replace what can’t, and make sure everything is properly maintained.
Even during slow seasons, work inquiries still come in.
That’s why the jobs that come during these times should be treated with extra care, and the customers who reach out should be valued even more.
Our services are not one-of-a-kind.
There are always others who could replace us, and we must never forget that. Being chosen when the total amount of work is limited is something we should be truly grateful for.
I also recommend using this time to prepare drafts and groundwork for the busy season.
This is something I did, and it helped immensely.
Sharpen your claws during the slow season and get ready.
Let’s all make the most of it.
Thank you very much for reading.
See you next time!
