Have you ever heard the phrase Memento Mori?
It’s a Latin term meaning “Remember that you will die.”
There’s a story from long ago in Europe about a victorious general who, during a parade celebrating a triumphant battle, had his attendant repeatedly whisper this phrase to him.
“This victory is not eternal…
It could have been my life that was lost instead.”
By remembering death, perhaps he avoided becoming arrogant in his moment of glory.
When someone feels the presence of death close by, how do they live the rest of their life?
Six months? A year? Or perhaps 50 more years?
Wise individuals often say that life is synonymous with time.
How much time of life do we each have left?
Are there things you want to do, places you want to visit, or experiences you wish to have?
It doesn’t have to be all about fulfilling your dreams.
Are you able to find happiness in your daily life?
We often assume that people don’t die.
We believe that we don’t die.
We take for granted that tomorrow and the day after will come, just as today did.
I feel the same way.
In fact, I rarely even think about it.
The concept of time often vanishes from my awareness, and it’s no wonder.
But what if tomorrow doesn’t come?
What if I face a life-threatening illness next year?
What if an accident takes my life?
Tomorrow’s arrival may seem inevitable, but in truth, it’s not guaranteed.
Today’s Reflection
Memento Mori. Death comes for all of us. Don’t forget that each day. You can’t take anything from this world into the realm of the dead, but you can leave something behind. Give to others.
I hope to include reflections like this in each post going forward.
If this resonates with you and makes your today even a little better than yesterday, I’d be delighted.
See you next time!
