I once read in a book that focusing on things other than yourself can bring great benefits. For example, showing interest in your children can help build trust with them. Taking an interest in others can lead to new encounters and stronger, more positive relationships.
People naturally want others to take an interest in them. They feel satisfied when someone listens to them. I believe this applies to me, and likely to you as well.
Personally, I find it more enjoyable to listen to others than to talk about myself. That said, when it comes to actions, I often struggle to focus on anything other than my own affairs.
I have trouble even showing interest in what my child is doing... Lately, I’ve been finding it difficult to navigate the distance between myself and my teenage son.
I’ve tried taking more of an interest in my son, asking him questions, but understandably, it probably feels strange to him. He might be thinking, "Why now, after all this time?"
It’s like when you achieve a great result at work, and a manager you don’t think highly of suddenly says, “Great job!” The natural reaction would be something like, “Huh? Why are you saying this now?”
Of course, today’s topic—showing interest in others—is undoubtedly something worth doing. People who can do this naturally are truly remarkable.
I just hope I can close the gap with my son before it becomes too wide and impossible to repair. Fingers crossed!
See you next time!
